Davidson steps in to assume SCCC Athletic Director role

Head baseball coach will perform double-duty for 2018-19

Seward County Community College head baseball coach Mike Davidson will assume duties as athletic director for the 2018-19 academic year. College president Dr. Ken Trzaska announced the decision on Tuesday, describing it as a choice to maintain continuity and consistency for SCCC Saints Athletics.

“We have positive momentum not only in athletics but at the college, and we know Mike can provide steady leadership based on his tenure at the college, his knowledge of athletics and confidence from his fellow coaches and colleagues throughout our campus,” said Trzaska.

Mike DavidsonDavidson has been part of the Seward family for nearly two decades, starting as assistant baseball coach in 2000. He moved to the head coach position in May 2018, and brought in former Saint Paul Pulley as his assistant. Austin King rounds out the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.

Davidson succeeds Roy Allen, who served as AD for two years, following several years as assistant AD and Sports Information Director. Allen’s departure occurred over the summer, in tandem with spouse and SCCC head volleyball coach Thais Baziquetto-Allen. The timing presented the college with a challenge that Davidson views as an opportunity for the institution and its seven athletic teams.

“I look at it as a chance to help athletics move in the right direction, to continue the ‘Seward County Way’ that we have come to know,” said Davidson. “I want the athletic department to move in a positive direction that continues that tradition.”

That said, Davidson is eager to build a sense of community with the many new coaches who have come on board in the past few months.

“When the summer started, my focus was on baseball, and I was excited that the two new guys I hired as assistant and volunteer were going to be instrumental, bring a lot of new ideas, refresh things after 18 years,” Davidson said. “It’s the same in the big picture, too,” with new faces in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, softball, cheer and dance.

“We have a lot of new, young coaches, with a lot of new ideas and energy, which is exciting, and I think that’s positive,” he said. “Hopefully, we can all work together and do our part. It’s going to be ‘we’ all the way.”

Davidson will continue in his role as head men’s baseball coach but also assume duties of athletic director.

“During the spring semester 2019 we will make a determination on whether Mike will continue as full-time athletic director or full-time baseball coach — the dual position will only last up to June 2019 at the most,” said Trzaska.

For now, Davidson is looking forward to the start of volleyball practices — slated to begin this week — and establishing open communications within the athletic department.

“I’m very excited with our group we’ve recruited — students and coaches — and I feel very good about the year ahead.”
