LIBERAL, Kan. – Seward County Community College Library has been chosen as one of 300 libraries to receive a $10,000 grant that will help the library improve key mobility accessibility areas within its facilities.
The Library was selected in a competitive process to participate in round three of Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an American Library Association initiative that provides community engagement and accessibility resources to small and rural libraries to help them better serve people with disabilities.
“We are incredibly honored to receive this grant,” said SCCC Library Director Casandra Norin. “Community is at the heart of Seward County Community College – it’s even in our name. This opportunity allows us to build stronger connections with our residents with disabilities, ensuring our library is a truly inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.”
As part of the grant, the college will interact with the community and communicate with residents about accessibility in the library and use the grant funds to support individuals with mobility challenges, ensuring a more welcoming and navigable environment for all.
Discussions through town hall meetings or individual correspondence through email, social media will be scheduled in the near future.
If you are interested in getting involved or taking part in the conversation, please contact Casandra Norin at Casandra.norin@sccc.edu, or visit https://sccc.edu/academics/library for more information.
Since 2014, ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative has re-imagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. Libraries of all types have utilized free dialogue and deliberation training and resources to lead community and campus forums; take part in anti-violence activities; provide a space for residents to come together and discuss challenging topics; and have productive conversations with civic leaders, library trustees, and staff.
‘Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities’ is an initiative of the American Library Association in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries.
