Liberal rotary club makes donation to SCCC for GED scholarships

LIBERAL – Seward County Community College continues to enjoy strong support from the Liberal Rotary Club, receiving a donation from the civic group to provide scholarships for GED students.

A check presentation was made at the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting on the SCCC campus on Tuesday. The SCCC Foundation received a check for approximately $3,300 to be distributed as scholarships to students working towards their GEDs at the Colvin Adult Learning Center.

Incoming Rotary President Colby Martin believes those particular students have a financial need.

“After talking with (Colvin Adult Learning Center Director Dr. Maria Fe Laguitan), I found out that a lot of the students either have the funds to do the test or get the materials, but not both,” Martin said. “We thought this was a great way to help the community.”

John Engel, SCCC Board of Trustee member and Foundation chair of the Rotary Board, agreed with Martin, adding that “there hasn’t been much giving (specifically earmarked) to the GED program.”

The Rotary club has supported the college through the years with donations as well as providing scholarships.

Laguitan expressed thanks to the Rotary for the donation.

“We’re very excited and grateful,” she said. “I’ve already received letters asking for assistance. (The members of the Rotary Club) have such big hearts for even considering us.”
