Mamma Mia! brings sunshine, humor, music to SCCC stage

Cast and performance dates announced for ABBA homage

LIBERAL, KAN. (March 1, 2020) — The sunny and funny Mamma Mia! spins and sparkles into the ultimate feel-good production for Seward County Community College’s spring musical.   It will play Friday April 17 and April 18 at 7 p.m. and April 19 at 3 p.m. in the Showcase Theater.

The energy and charm of ABBA’s songs propel this story of love, laughter and friendship. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie has secretly invited three men from her mother Donna’s diary to the Greek island paradise in a quest to discover the identity of her father. Donna’s long-time friends from her music group “Donna and the Dynamos” also arrive for the wedding to catch up and reminisce.

SCCC Drama Instructor and Director Michele Van Hessen sums up the plot as similar to a Shakespearean play.

“A young girl is in search of father,” she said, “but Shakespeare plays aren’t held together by the music of ABBA. Some of the songs are built into the script just like Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals where the song advances the story.”

The creative team includes SCCC Vocal Instructor and Music Director Dr. Magda Silva, SCCC Band Instructor and Department Head of Humanities, Conductor Darin D. Workman, and SCCC Housing Director and production Assistant Director Jennifer Malin The cast includes, in order of appearance,  Rebecca Irby as Sophie Sheridan, Trina Fosdick as Donna Sheridan, Madelyn Sander as Tanya, Kambrian Acevedo as Rosie, Brian Francis as Bill Austin, Matt Teel as Harry Bright, Jeremy Bernhardt-Purdy as Sam Charmichael, Logan Scruggs as Sky, Natasha Hallam as Ali, Jamie Francis as Lisa, Caleb Linkous as Pepper, Ocklea Quigey, Jade Harper, and Elizabeth Irby as Islanders hotel workers, and Dennis Sander as Father Alexandrios.
