Next 8-week session at Colvin Adult Learning Center begins October 28
Earlier this fall, the Advanced English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the Colvin Adult Learning Center held class at Liberal Memorial Library to learn about the resources provided at and through the library. Students were greeted by various library staff and warmly welcomed; many of the students were new to Liberal’s library.
During a special guided tour, the students learned about the children’s section and programming. They also learned about various services such as Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and how the books for the library are ordered and shelved.
The library offers various programs for all ages, including movies, book club, games, recipe swap, and something new – an Escape Room, fun for the whole family. Several students have small children and were excited to hear about two free programs – “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” that encourages children and families to read together. The other program is “Baby’s Bookshelf” which aims to begin a child’s first library. The Colvin Center students learned about the different sections of the library: teens, non-fiction, fiction, video, Spanish and how to look up what they need. The tour completed in the library’s new coffee bar, where the coffee and hot chocolate is free. Several students took advantage of the free, hot coffee while they each applied for a library card; some checking out items before leaving. (http://lmlibrary.org/how-do-i/get-a-library-card/)
The classes used space in the large basement of the library and finished class by working on the art of writing a “Thank You” note. Examples and a template proved valuable as the students each wrote diligently to craft a note of appreciation to the library staff. The students then hand delivered their note to the library’s front desk prior to leaving.
Many thanks to Director Royce Kitts for assisting in arranging the day’s tours as well as leading one of them. Special thanks also to Matt Teel & Sarah Moyer for leading tours and providing a friendly place for the students.
