Seward County Community College gave its Lady Saints an enthusiastic send-off Friday as the women’s basketball team set out for Lubbock and the NJCAA National Tournament. Employees, fans, and members of the Lady Saints gathered in the Saints Bookstore to sign a good-luck poster, congratulate the team, and share the love. Bookstore director Jerri Lynn Lyddon handed out sparkly green bead necklaces, employee Lynn Gerstenkorn gave team members special T-shirts, and everyone in attendance enjoyed cupcakes and snacks.

Head coach Toby Wynn praised the Lady Saints for stepping up in spite of injuries and a grueling schedule. The group of players, he said, has stuck together, become friends, and impressed him and everyone who sees them play. Assistant Coach DeeDee Brown and volunteer assistant Carlo Walton gave high fives and big smiles to players and fans alike.

The Lady Saints received a #8 seed at the NJCAA National Tournament and will get their tournament kicked off on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they will take on the winner of the 9 vs. 24 matchup between South Plains and Monroe.  The winner of that game is likely to see top ranked Gulf Coast in the semifinals on Thursday.

Saints fans are invited to travel to Lubbock Thursday via a college-sponsored fan bus. The bus will load at 7 a.m., in the south parking lot of the main campus. Transportation will be provided at no cost to people at 18 and older. Participants will be responsible to purchase their own food and tickets to the NJCAA tournament. Single day entry tickets are $10, $5 for students with ID. The bus is expected to return to Liberal at 8 p.m.

Lady Saints smile as they listen to Coach Toby Wynn thank the crowd for the enthusiastic send-off.
