Students in Virginia Lerma’s English as a Second Language class visited the SCCC Library in early October as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. As part of their in-class work to introduce themselves, Lerma’s students created poster and craft displays to share information about their countries of origin. These were placed on display at the library, brightening the entrance hallways.
Students arrived to see their work exhibited, and get familiar with the resources the library offers. Most had not been on campus before, said, Director of Adult Education Katie Reck.
“We want them to feel comfortable and to be able to picture themselves here, once they’ve completed their adult education classes,” she said.
Library Director Casandra Norin urged the students not to wait, but to utilize the library now.
“It’s free and it’s available to the community,” she said. Along with being open on Sundays, the library offers additional amenities such as the family room for students with young children. “We have books and activities for the kids to occupy themselves while you study,” said Norin.
Lerma was thrilled to bring her students to the campus environment.
“It opens so many possibilities for them,” she said. “I love seeing them here.”
