Holiday cheer spreads across campus

While the end of a semester includes a certain level of stress, the positive side of December at Seward involves cookies, sweaters, and plenty of holiday cheer. Among the opportunities for students are cookies and cocoa to stave off those pre-exam jitters, Moonlight Finals breakfast, gingerbread-house-building, food drives, concerts, performances in the community, a Christmas Parade, gift exchanges and Toys for Tots.

• It’s time once again for the Holiday Hustle 5K/1 mile Fun Run! This is the only race in Southwest Kansas led by Santa and Mrs. Claus, and featuring bottomless hot cocoa and cookies! New this year: free T-shirt to all entrants, plus a mug and green Santa hat. Co-sponsored by SCCC Foundation and the Liberal Area Coalition for Families.

Register today at the SCCC Alumni web page.

• Community Christmas Parade — 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, down Kansas Avenue in downtown Liberal. Saints vocalists Alize and Mario Garcia will perform as part of the live entertainment, and the parade will include at least one entry from our campus. Hint: it’s big and boxy and rules the road! Downtown merchants will offer special deals for holiday shopping and refreshments to stave off the chill.

• Brain Food for you! — 10:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, Saints ESP (the employee club for support personnel) will host a Trail Mix Bar in the Hobble Hallway. Anyone who’s too busy to stop for a meal can create a custom snack mix, which is sold for $1 or $2 portions. Take care of yourself!

• Chill Week for SCCC Saints — Dec. 3 to Dec. 7, in the Student Union. Director of Student Life Wade Lyon has assembled an array of activities that put the fun back into the weeks leading up to holiday break. If you’re stressing over finals, this is the solution!

Wednesday, 10 a.m., Decorate Your Own Christmas Cookie

Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m., Free Five-Minute Massages

• Block and Bridle Club will raise money for Toys for Tots with a fun “Cup Pong” competition for teams. Entry fee is $10 or a quality toy, and prizes will be awarded. Date and time TBD.

• Annual Christmas Lunch with Santa, 11 a.m. to 1:30 in the Great Western Dining cafeteria. For $5, guests can enjoy a feast of roast beef, roast ham, all the trimmings, and the all-important pie! Join us, and bring your smallest Santa fans along for a photo op!

• Winter Concert  — 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at the Showcase Theater in the Shank Humanities Building. Enjoy a festive program filled with Christmas classics and fun variations, performed by the SCCC Concert Band and the SCCC Concert Choir. Tickets for the show are sold in advance through the Humanities office, or at the door; price is $3, but current students can pick up a free ticket with their student ID. Proceeds from the concert benefit the SCCC Music Endowment Fund.

• Moonlight Finals  — 8:30-10 p.m., Monday, Dec. 10, at the SCCC Cafeteria. This late-night breakfast is cooked and served by our executive team for all students, free of charge. Stop by for an omelette, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon and eggs — and lots of coffee to help with late-night study sessions!
