Fundraiser will send students to national convention

The student members of the auto body collision repair club are sponsoring a two-month car wash & detail fundraiser for a class trip.
Ready to clean out the remains of summer travel and back-to-school shopping from your car? Get the sparkle back, and contribute to a cause with the fundraiser sponsored by the Industrial Technology student club at Seward County Community College. The students will perform car wash and detailing services from now through the end of October to raise fund for a class trip to the SEMA (Speciality Equipment Market Association) conference Oct. 28.
A basic car wash is priced at $15; interior and exterior cleaning is $40; a complete clean, detail, and buffing job is $75.
“We’ll do the work when it works for our customers,” said SCCC auto-body instructor Bree Downs, who is also the club sponsor. Downs emphasizes customer service with her students, which means the class will gladly set aside its projects to serve car wash patrons.
“Just call me to schedule a time between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday,” Downs said, “and we’ll set you up.”

“The SEMA show is the premier event for anyone who works in the auto-body industry,” she said. “It’s mind-boggling, and definitely something that will inspire the students to be the best.”
SEMA Show exhibitors enlist top vehicle builders to create custom cars and trucks that will generate worldwide attention and stand out at the premier automotive trade show each year.
More than 250 of these builders will compete in the 4th annual SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, with the finalists announced during the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nev.
“It’s great to see the amazing array of vehicle builds at the SEMA Show each year,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA VP of events and communications. “It’s inspiring to watch the SEMA Battle of the Builders competition, as we meet the builders and learn about the products and stories behind the cars and trucks.”
The club activities and trip are part of the Auto Body Collision Repair program, which has established a cohort known as “The Auto Body Family” for the academic year.
“Our deal is that we want to be better than average,” said Downs, who aims to go beyond the role of instructor to serve as mentor to students enrolled in her program. “That’s why we chose the motto ‘Don’t be basic.’ We want to do great things.”
