The Greenhouse gets a facelift

New video boards and bleachers installed in SCCC gym

When Saints fans enter the Greenhouse this semester, they’re going to notice a difference – a big difference.

The Seward County Community College gym received a $250,000 facelift this summer with the addition of state-of-the-art video boards and new bleachers for the student section.

The video boards, which replaces the old scoreboards on both sides of the gym, will enhance the fan experience with stunning graphics and videos, said Ian Applegate, SCCC assistant director of athletics for communications.

“We’re going to do a lot of dynamic stuff that the fans are really going to appreciate it. We can put up hype videos before the game and player introductions. It’s really going to enhance the fanfare that you would see at Division I level schools, Applegate said, adding that (the video boards) are “something that no one in the (Jayhawk) conference has. It really sets us apart from everyone else.”

“The bleachers make the gym look completely different,” Applegate said. “They’re solid black and ADA compliant. It makes the gym pop and looks a lot more modern. That will make the student section experience a lot better.”

The boards and bleachers received support from the community. Funds, were in part, provided by Old Chicago, Freddy’s, Great Western Dining, Hampton Inn, Pepsi, College Foundation and the Booster Club.

Applegate emphasized that the video boards will be more than just for athletics and be an attraction for the community.

“It’s going to be huge for graduation,” Applegate said. “We can bring in different organizations. We can have movie night with the Saints. We want to bring in the community.”

The first sporting event for 2018-19 at the Greenhouse will be 6:30 p.m., Saturday, September 1 when the Lady Saints volleyball team hosts Garden City.
